Crosier Kilgour & Partners was the structural engineering consultant for this commercial retail development, constructed between 1985 and 1987. The building is approximately 498,000 square feet with a two-level underground parking structure located beneath the entire footprint.
Four levels of reinforced concrete superstructure comprise the shopping centre’s two levels of retail space with clerestory glazed structural steel structures in the mall areas. The superstructure and parking levels are supported on a combination of caissons, both rock-socketed and bearing on till.
Special design considerations included the third-floor Imax Theatre, where the steel superstructure and tiered concrete floor structure are isolated completely from the retail structure below by a system of acoustically-designed isolation pads. In addition, three movie theatres and one stage theatre were designed as part of this unique structure.
